Let’s imagine for a second how beer pong got its start. Of course, it is often attributed to the genius students of Dartmouth College who actually play the game with a paddle and call it Beirut. So, let’s start with that image.
Two guys are drinking and decide to play a game of ping pong. They pick up their paddles and place their beer cups on the edge of the table. As they volley, one guy puts the ping pong ball in the other guy’s cup. They laugh and roll around on the floor. Then, the other guy wants to give it a try. Thus, begins the game commonly known as Beer Pong.
Sound close enough? It doesn’t matter. I’ve been there when a game was invented. I know how it works and that’s about as realistic of a beginning for Beer Pong as anyone needs. Of course, later that evening they were making shots off the wall and popping the ping pong ball up in the air as high as they could get it to see if they could make it. More people joined obviously by then and from that day on, they could never stop talking about it. By the end of the semester, they had teams ready to challenge any fraternity or sorority at any given time.
So, fast forward to present day and we have Beer Pong tables that are regulation size. We have inflatable tables that float in the pool. There are coolers that will keep the beer cold while sitting at the end of the table patiently awaiting an awesome Beer Pong shot. That’s right folks! Beer Pong has taken the world by storm and it’s here to stay. I can honestly see it being entered in the Olympics one day.
If you haven’t seen the game played, it is one of the most unique games that you can sit and watch for hours. If you have good players who know what they are doing and are very imaginative, they can make some of the greatest shots ever. Here are just a few you can watch if you Google “Beer Pong.”
Three dinner tray tables are setup so that two lean in toward the one in the middle. The Beer Pong specialist drops the ping pong ball and it bounces from one table over the glass to the other table and then back to the glass in the middle. Yes, Beer Pong has evolved into a sport that doesn’t necessarily require a regulation table. Any inventive player can come up with any creative surface.
If that wasn’t exciting enough for you, how about when a Beer Pong expert takes a shot off a chess board sitting on the floor? It doesn’t sound exciting until you add that the ping pong ball bouncing off of a dresser over to a fire extinguisher and into the cup. Yes, a chess board, a dresser and a fire extinguisher. That’s a bit over the top.
So, I continue with yet another awesome Beer Pong moment. One bounce off of a chair and the Beer Pong expert lands his shot perfectly…on the top of his head. Another expert bounces the ping pong ball on a set of shelves. It travels the length of the shelf, bounces off the wall at the other end and starts its journey back to the Beer Pong expert on the lower shelf where it ends its journey in the cup. That was one that was truly awesome and I will never stop talking about it for as long as I live.
Regulation size tables are awesome and they come in handy for competitions that will bring teams together for a great evening of Beer Pong action. But, get some practice first using the walls around your home and other surfaces that your creative imagination can pull together. When you see how much fun you can have being a very inventive Beer Pong expert, take it to another level and get into the Beer Pong Championships.
